I use a .243 in a 600 Mohawk for many years growing up. Yes, there was a recall on them because they would sometimes fire when taken off safety. I believe the safety was defective on some year models and they recalled them.

Yes, there was a recall on the Mohawk 600. Check with Remmy if you buy it. May need a new trigger. I would think under $500. They aren't that uncommon. I picked one up for my nephew in 6mm. Think the price was somewhere in the range of $400.

My 308 had the trigger problem when I got it. Remmington fixed it no charge. The gun has put down a ton of deer for me and is as accurate as they get. I have not shot it in years, Put a Burris scope on it about 10 years ago, took up bow hunting and have not shot it since. I love the mohawks and my wife is wanting to go hunting, The 308 kicks a little to much for her. So I am looking for a 243 or a 6mm. Would rather have a 6mm, but they are getting scarce it seems. Thanks for the help

The 600 had a trigger problem and would sometimes fire when the bolt was closed. Also, Remington will upgrade the safety where you are not required to switch the safety to the fire position to open the bolt. The recall has been going on for about 20 years, but Remington will still honor the recall and safety upgrade.

As Insman stated I have a mohawk 600 in .243 as far as price I paid $75.00 for mine in early 80's and still have it.It rides in rear seat of my pickup while I am working at 3 different ranches that I work........I know my son ltl Andy saw some at Dury's in San Antonio for 500-650 so if you get if for under 500 it should be ok as long as barrel is ok and in good working order....Andy

By the way, my dad had a gunsmith cut about 1-1.5" off the stock and a kick pad put on mine back when I was a kid. I hope my boys will get to use it in a few more years.
One think about mine, we always hand loaded our rifle ammo. My dad had a Remington model 788 in .243 and it would shoot anything we threw in it, but the Mohawk bolt would not close on some shells. We always did a full length resize of the shells, and checked every single case for over all length, about 50% of them would not even allow the bolt to close. About 40% would close, but it would be a tight fit and only 10% or so would fit easily in the chamber of the Mohawk. We never did figure out why the chamber was so tight on that rifle, so we just went through all our hand loads and picked out the ones that worked best. Factory ammo chambered just fine, if my memory servers me right.

the .308 shot 1/4" group at 100 yards still have the target

the .243 Model 7 was tested at the South African police Ballistic lab for samples date base and the col that ran the test said the .243 Win shot the tightest 3 shot group he had ever see all in the same hole

I have had both the 788 and mohawk in .243 and I have loved them. My dad still has the 788. I ran into the same issue with reloads in these two guns that keith had. The 788 would group just about every load that you wanted to throw at it. Both are great guns i really wish remington had not dropped the 788...
