I painted the ceiling of our new house with a similar looking stuff. It works great when combined with another layer of insulation but after painting I looked like the tin man off wizard of oz. I tried everything too but I ended up scrubbing the heck out of everything with Lava soap and orange clean. The pumice really helps.
