    Early season food plot?

I hunt in Van Zandt county and was wanting to have a plot this year, the ground is sandy with a little red clay. I was looking at cowpeas and mixing it with some clover. I know hogs will be a problem, is mid August too early to start? I will be able to water it also if needed

I don't think cow peas will be available at all this year.

If you can get cowpeas (I usually can find them), get me. My deer love them. But August is too early IMO.

Purple hull peas work good as well, and if your feeling adventurous throw some okra in too- don't forget to inoculate your peas!

I guess I'm clueless. Why and how do you do that?

I always wait till mid September cause of the rain issue and heat. My plots usually dont start growing good until late october

Good info, I will be able to water and was hoping to have a good stand of it going before season starts just don't want to waste my time and do it too early

Buy some powder inoculant to spread in the bag and mix it around.

Inoculation is prob overkill and a waste of money for the size of plot you are planting.

Ah ok thanks. This will be my first year to plant food plots so I'm learning. And yes they will be small. Thanks!

I'll be planting something about the 2nd week of September at my place in East Texas.
