    Quick wiring question

I'm gathering all my materials to wire up my air compressor in the shop. I think what I'm using will be fine, but someone has me second guessing myself. Here's the details.

The motor is rated at 24A for 240V, single phase. I was told to add in a safety factor of 50%, so that would be 36A.

I have a 40A breaker (yes, for 240V ) and will be adding a starter and overload relay as well.

The wire is 8/3 copper, which is good for 40A, and the run will only be ~45 feet or so.

    Should be no problem, right?

Should be fine, but it might not hurt to find starting load if motor. Your figure probably covers it though.

Yup your golden. I doubt the starting load is even 36A but if it is your good too go!and like said it should say somewhere what it is

All of the materials mentioned is over rating it all. Nothing wrong with that.
Breaker is 10 amps over what you need, but I do not think it will be an issue.

If your buying a store bought compressor (packaged unit), that safety factor is already figured in, so all you really need is 30 amp and #10 THHN.... At 45', no need to worry with any voltage drop.

Your good to go with 30 amp. You have to be careful when over sizing too much as it won't give you the necessary protection. In other words, if you have a wiring issue, you could have some serious issues / damage before the breaker ever trips. Just be careful. I personally wouldn't oversize to 40 amps. When your dealing with larger motors, you have to be concerned with LRA or "locked rotor amps". But with this 5 HP, you shouldn't have any issues. Modern breakers carry an HACR rating which allows the momentary start-up surge without tripping the breaker.
