    Predator Calling Tips

I'm fairly new to predator calling but I have a fox pro digital caller with tons of calls on it. I also have the black jack decoy that goes with it. I have several thousand acres to hunt on so several setups are not usually an issue.

I have had terrible luck with getting anything to come to the calls I use on the FoxPro. My question is what calls do you guys use and how long do you normally let the call run before you go onto the next setup. Next questions is regarding night hunting, how long do you run the spotlight or do you keep it on the whole time. Any tips tricks or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Right now is not a good time of the year to be calling. All of them are in dens

The questions you asked could take a book to answer. If you use the search feature you'll find any number of helpful threads. To answer your questions you'd have to tell us what you're wanting to hunt, primarily. I call differently for coyotes than bobcats.

Coyotes- rarely more than 15-20 minutes and move .5-1 mile and call again; and I mostly hunt coyotes in the daylight. Especially first and last light.

Bobcats- stay on stand 30-40 minutes and I only target them at night. Move .25-.5 miles between sets.

Call choice is a hard one to answer. It really depends on what you're targeting, the time of year, what they're eating in your area, what you've used before, etc. Start with distress calls and experiment. For coyotes I'll call 30-60 seconds and then stop for 1-3 minutes. For cats I'll run the call almost constantly with only brief pauses, like when I'm mouth calling and need to gasp for air.

My suggestion is you go check out some predator calling forums like PredatorMasters. There's a guy named Tony Tebbe that made a AWESOME instructional video that would really help you to get a running start. Go check out PredatorUniversity.com He also has some free sounds you can download to your Foxpro that work great; and if you want to learn to mouth call, mimic his calling sequence.

Good luck! It's an addictive hobby!

I disagree, respectfully. When they are denned up they're even more territorial than usual. It's a great time to use challenge calls to provoke coyotes into protecting their dens. It's more challenging but if you locate those dens it can make for some great hunting. However, its definitely easier and more pleasant hunting the cooler months; and the fur is worth a little.
