"Mounting Up"-Double Axis with a Twist

I got in 3 summer axis bucks from my good friend that were shedding their velvet to be mounted up. His father and BIL's wanted their pose to be upright and straight.

Nice bucks. Are you able to share where abouts they were killed? Looking forward to the mount.

We have a euro mount of one with the shedding. Cool looking mount.

        Aren't you Troy's buddy?

The twist: I had to rehydrate the dried velvet in order to strip it off (per client's request). I'll have to stain the antler's due to the lack of the natural color that would be present had the axis been able to remove the velvet by himself. So into a big sink they went wrapped in a wet towel to rehydrate. The smell reminded me of a bad case of athlete's foot...of course as it should be because they share the same (keratin protein) genetic make-up.

So I started to prep the form and get the first rack schematically attached.

So you weren't able to talk them out of it?

Blake- Yes sir, Troy and I are pretty good buds. Mounted up a couple of his breeder bucks. They were harvested on the Brockman Ranch with Outfitter Dustin McRae.

I wouldn't be a good moral taxi if I didn't but it's what they were set on. Luckily, I got the 3rd axis hopefully doing something different.

What would have been your preference? Just curious.

Yea, Troy mentioned you before. He sent me some updated pics today of Flush and Revenge.

Today is his B-day by the way.

Passed thru Kerrville yesterday but didn't have time to stop and visit.

Like I had said on the last "Mounting Up" Thread, I'm in blitz mode before I leave for Utah in a couple of weeks for archery elk so the pics in this process are non existent. Got them both finally mounted up and drying but will reconvene in two weeks when the finish work commences. In the mean time, quail, eland, and that red fish you see in the above pics will be worked on. I'll join all of those progress pics into this thread as well so stay tuned!

                        ANYTHING but straight.
No matter how good the mount, they still look like a deer in the headlights with something up his rump.

                        Just my opinion.

Yeah, the big 3-0. Gonna buy him some Depends, bifocals, and prunes as a bday gag gift. He texted me a 2-1/2 y.o. big typical since he knows how I love those big typicals.
