    Food plot ideas???

I am planning a food plot here is what I am thinking... I am going to brush hog the area around my feeder pen about half acre to 1 acre... Then I am going to till up the soil... Let it sit for a few days then kill it again and fertilize it... Next I will take a broadcast Spreader and drop the seeds.... Last I have a piece of fence that I will drag to cover the seeds with dirt... I wish I had all the fancy equipment to do this but that stuff sure gets expensive... I have watched several videos on YouTube and it looks like you can really get a lot of money tied up in these food plots...

Any suggestions on what I should plant this time of year would be appreciated...
Here is a picture of the area

100 lbs Wheat or 100 lbs of oats per acre (or mix 50/50).

Plant last week of September/First week of October.

    Pray for rain.

Don't plant anything right now...way til mid Sept around a rain. Oats and clover in a mix is hard to beat.

Can't hurt......if It is soft enough. I've got a drag behind king cutter that I'm going to work out this weekend! Might throw down some fertilizer for good measure then come back and add seeds in Sept/oct. Couple more discing sessions in between.

NOOOO, don't do anything to the soil yet. don't disc or till till you are ready to plant. by tilling now you will be losing soil moisture, then if you till again you lose even more soil moisture. Never till ground until you are ready to plant.

Don't plant until mid September, around the 15th. When you do plant, plant a mixture of Winter wheat and oats (buy seed oats not race horse oats). it never hurts to also buy a couple pounds each of some sort of clover and a brassica or two like turnips

Yep and spray again before planting.

btw if you want to kill the grass that is there, you can go ahead and roundup the whole plot. then wait 2 weeks and round up it again that will help with weeds in your plots

Man I am glad you posted this!!! I have always wanted to do a food plot but, had no idea of how to do or what is the right thing to plant. Does the same mix and time frame work for east Texas?

plant around the 15th of sept and you will be good. just mix wheat, oats and some clover and brassicas and you will be GTG

Might want to consider putting a herbicide down (on ground, not trees) on the food plot area before or after you till it and waiting a week before planting. It will give you far more yield if you kill off existing weeds and grass that will compete with your oats. I like to mow my plot areas real low, almost like scalping your yard, then apply herbicide.

Herbicide will not impact your planted seeds if you wait 48 hours before planting.I wait a week. Many folks don't realize what a difference this can make because they havent ever tried it.

If youre looking for a Fall harvest plot only (not really concerned about nutrition), oats are hard to beat. If you want a Spring/ Summer benefit, mix in about 2 lbs of chicory seed with each 50 lbds of oats you plant. Turkey love Chicory too.
