Who else prefers not to use cameras for scouting. I like the feeling of not knowing what to expect. The images that pop in your head when you cut that huge track or find that massive rub, not trying to match up the photos with the most likely buck that track came from. Not saying that there anything wrong with trail cameras I love looking at y'alls post I just don't want to know what's coming down my trail before I see it on the stand

Well, I have been having a blast, until the cameras crap out!
I understand what your saying, but I hunt so much territory,in two counties, public land and a lease, that the cameras help narrow the areas to hunt at least a little. I see bucks that are in the areas during the non-rut periods, then I see bucks during the rut that are not from the area. I see how far some of these bucks range, rut and non-rut. Also get to see antler characteristics. Then there is a lot of other animals to see also.
It also helps to enjoy deer when the season is closed. All good for me.

I didn't run one last year and the excitement factor was much higher never knowing what you might see. Every member in camp was always fixated on their pics and always upset when that one cruising pic of a buck never showed again. They do serve a great purpose, but for my current lease I have no desire to run one. Show up and hunt is my theory.

About the best thing I have found is set up a Plot Watcher and a regular camera. The plot Watcher will tell you everything that visits your feeder in daylight. I use a regular game cam for nighttime and daytime pics where the quality will be better. The drawbacks of the Plot Watcher is it only captures video in daylight, the still photos you get are not high resolution, and you get so much footage it takes a while to look at it all. I like to look at the pictures/video, but I don't get focused on any one particular buck. I am looking for a mature deer, and when I see one I will know it. You never know what will show up and cameras never tell 100% of the story.

I hunt 4 different places in 3 different counties. On top of that, I'm gone a lot with work. I don't hunt DEER over corn, so I scout out areas, and set up trail cams in strategic places for stand placement. I don't necessarily use them to find that big buck, but more so to keep record of movements as these East Texas deer as we all know, tend to change up their routes quite a bit.
I also only check them once ever couple of weeks, and then once the season start, I only check them when I'm walking to my stand, and swap out SD cards. Too many folks check theirs way too often, leaving their scent behind everytime.
