Thats a good article. I have tracking dogs and I strongly advocate snake avoidance training and I get my dogs the shots too. I hope I don't have to find out if the shots really help or not.

It was a good article. Thanks for sharing. I have a JRT that is a tracking dog. He has been to snake avoidance training several times and also gets regular vaccinations. He got hit by a copperhead in our back yard last month. I have used in in West Texas for a number of years without an encounter that I know of. What luck to get bit in the yard! It cost me a lot of coins at the Vet's office but he made a complete recovery in about 24 hours. JRT's are fairly small dogs although he is a big one at about 30 lbs. I really believe in the vaccinations. I don't think he would have bounced back so fast without the shots.

          Good read. Thanks for sharing.

Our lab got bit on the end of his nose last fall but we're not 100% sure what flavor of snake it as. No one has ever reported a rattle snake in our area of the neighborhood but it is possible. More than likely it was a copperhead. The vet said that based on the fang marks is was a mature snake and luckily it was basically a "dry bite". There were signs of venom but not much. Of course as luck would have it I was at the lease hunting and the wife and daughters were left to deal with the issue. I will give the wife credit, she was not too freaked out and she wasn't mad but I was issued instructions to bring my snake boots home and remove most all of the shrubs from our backyard upon my return!

My female lab loves to find copperheads and gets bit at least once a year. When bit we feed her a stick of butter and she is fine in about 5 hours. Don't have a clue as to what the butter does but my wife had found something about it. All I know is that it woorks fast and takes all the swelling out in no time.
