The Big Texan - 72 oz Steak

Me and my cousin are going to stop at The Big Texan on our way back from our Elk hunt in September and try our hand at eating the 72 oz steak dinner. Has anyone ever tried it and do you have any advice? I understand there's a Live Web cam there so I'll have to post up when we'll be there so whoever wants to can watch and cheer us on....or laugh hysterically at our epic failure

I know a TBH'er who has done it twice successfully and no it wasn't me.

I know of another TBHer who has done it a couple of times successfully. He doesn't post much so I'll quote him. He said to eat the steak first, the salad, then the shrimp then the potato. Don't drink beer or cokes and drink enough water to swallow, but not so much it fills you up.

Also, I watched a guy try to do it and he took his time to use a fork and knife. Watching him, it seemed like the manners really slowed him down. Just saying...

A friend of mine took the challenge a few years ago on the way home from a skiing trip. He failed, miserably. He got through all the sides, and about 3/4s of the steak. But he literally couldn't take another bite and was miserable the entire car ride home. One of the chefs was mocking him throughout, which added to the humor for me. Good luck!

Seems like the Man vs. Food guy ate all the steak first and then the sides.

Better eat a big meal the night before and stretch out the gut.

When I stopped in there about 25 years ago, the record was held by two brothers that didn't 6 minutes. They said they picked up the steak and ate it like a hamburger.
If you tried and failed back then I think it cost you around $70. How much is it now?

I know how to do it. I have not done it personally but know someone who has. The secret according to my friend is don't chew the steak. Cut it into small bites and swallow the bites whole. I personally wouldn't do that. I have been there a few times passing through and watched folks give it a go with no success. If you go for it, Good luck.

                          Good luck!

Back in HS, me and my friends used to do the challenge at the old Traildust Steakhouse in Dallas. Once they figured out they were putting our pictures on the wall 3-4 times a week, they stopped letting us do it.
