I'm thinking about trying the product from Record Rack called Golden Deer Nuggets. Has anybody tried this product before? If so, what does it cost per bag? I also believe this could be substituted for protein. Is this true? I'm new to this screen, but was a member before the crash. Thanks for any input.

Glad to see you made it back to the new green screen!
I'm in the process of trying it out myself. I think I paid $6.40 per bag for 40# bags. The jury is still out because the pigs have run the deer off the feeder I am feeding it in. The pigs sure like it though.
It's a corn substitute not a protein substitute. It is higher in protein and fat than corn is.

I used it last year in my feeder in a mix with my corn. Deer ate it and i was going to use it again, but at 7.50/bag and only 13% protein, it's overpriced for such a small increase in protein over corn. Heck, the deer can get that or a little more out of mesquite beans. Not a substitute for protein, but if the price were better, might be a boost from the corn feeder.
If I'm going to spend that amount of money, I'll give them 20% protein pellets.

So far this season we witnessed more mature bucks going to free choice protein feeders and completely ignoring corn feeders and in some instances....hand thrown corn.
Matter of fact...we've turned off all our corn feeders on one ranch.
I've come to the conclusion, protein feed is a better attractant for mature bucks then corn....with one important aspect, though...it needs to be a free choice feeder.
Having said that, though, I think one needs to be very, very careful hunting over protein feeders. Doing so could very well compromise what you're trying to accomplish with the feed....and that is, for the deer to eat as much of it as possible. Excess hunting pressure could defeat that goal.
My point is....I think mature bucks know that the protein feed is more beneficial and thus are drawn to it.
As far as this product....I see some value in it from a filming perspective (no yellow brick road on film)..

I use it and can get it for around $6 per bag in Lampasas.
I mix it with corn and have never have had any feeder problems. It is more resistant to rain/water than regular protein pellets.
The ranch I hunted last week in Kerrville (see Spike under hunts) uses it exclusively with protein pellets. And, a big named TV hunting celebrity uses it (protein feeders) on his ranch in Seguin...Last edited by rossn2; 12-14-2006, 10:05 AM.
