Why does Texas make things so Dang comlicated????

My family and I moved back to Tx after being gone for 21 years. (career military). Last summer when we came back, we had the hardest time getting all our vehicles re-registered and titled in TX along with getting TX DL. Several trips to the court house and DPS office along with a ton of paperwork we had to dig up we finally got everything. Today I bought a used boat that I'm putting on a homemade trailer and I go to the court house to get a plate for the trailer along with a plate for a utility trailer I've had nearly 10 years. They tell me I have to schedule an appointment with this investigator in Beaumont (I'm in Orange), bring the trailer to him, let him inspect it, correct any issues he finds, bring it back to him for another inspection then bring all documents back to the courthouse. This I have to do 2 times since I want a plate for both trailers. No telling what the inspection fee will be! I love this state, born and raised here, but things were SO much simpler and cheaper when I lived in Alabama and Mississippi. When I needed a plate for that utility trailer I mentioned, I just went to the courthouse told them I had a homemade trailer I needed a tag for. The lady handed me a book with some pictures of various trailers. She told me to look through it and pick the one closes to mine. I flicked a few pages then told her "this one". She looked at it, said o.k. that will be $12.00 and handed me a plate. 1 trip to courthouse, never asked for any kind of proof of ownership, and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. So simple, things are so aggravating here!

Yup. They've gone crazy with all the registration these days. Used to be a lot easier.

thank all the trailer thieves for the trailer woes...as for the id issues...not sure why that was so difficult, illegals have an easier time getting an id it sounds like

Something that ticked me off.. I went to buy beer and use my Passport because I misplaced my ID. The guy at the gas station said he can't take a passport, against policy. WTH? How hard is it to make a fake passport compared to a fake ID. I'm 21, dont have a fake now but I did, very easy to come by. Heck there is a guy near Columbus off HWY 71 that sells "Novelty IDs" for $25 bucks!!!! I went in and asked him 2 or 3 years ago, its the white house on your left travelling East. They looked like crap though, but still.

              So easy.

.... for people to steal trailers. No documentation, don't even have to show the trailer, no proof that it is even homemade, etc.

Buy a stolen trailer or steal it yourself, pop the VIN plate, touch up paint if needed, a $12 tag and you are on your way.

I didn't have any problem down here in south Texas. 2 years ago I bought a trailer off of a friend that had made one. I went to the courthouse and they just asked me what the load capacity was, I paid got my plate and was on my way.

Do you HAVE to do this in the county you live in? If not, run over to the next county and see if it is less hassle.

Point is, Texas is making it very hard for normal folks who want to do the right thing but are hassled to no end. Say what you will about other states but things were a lot less stressful there.

It's because of all the stolen trailers in Texas. Good way to find them.

The bigger counties are a little strict on this stuff. Oddly enough, I have better luck at the TxDOT office on Washington in Houston than I do at the Montgomery County Tax Office. They are getting better though.
