    All Star Question

Pardon my ignorance but why was the pitcher that started the 8th inning given a standing ovation by all the fans and players?

I'm only a passing sports fan so I'm not up to date on who's who.

    Thanks.

Mariano Rivera. Best closer ever. He is retiring this year so this will be his last all star game.

Thank you. I just heard them giving his stats etc and caught the jest of it. Thanks for answering though, sounds like he's the real deal.

Why didn't he come on in bottom of 9th? Pardon my ignorance.

Just in case the AL lost the lead in the 8th and there would be no 9th. Basically just guarantees he'll get in the game.

Definitely an awesome moment for sports in general.

He is the all time saves leader.
