The guy who owns the local gunsmith shop in SJ has an old Allen in his shop, and claims Allen lived in SJ while he was experimenting and building his early prototypes. Castello said he owned a sporting goods shop in downtown SJ, and sold him the bear bows Allen used to cut off the limbs to make his prototypes. He also claims the first time a compound was shot outdoors was at the Black Mountain Bowman archery range.

His story sounded credible, but it's not what I've read on the web about Allen.

Neat story, and he does have a very old Allen bow in his shop.

What does it shoot like? Compare it to a 'modern' compound?

I am guessing it feels like a tuning rod in hand.

I love the "S" hooks that keeps the string. Those things probably shoot just as well now as they did back then. With carbons, one could probably get a good 170 or 180 fps out it.

I'll see if I can get a pic of the old Allen at the gunshop this am, I'm trying to figure how to ask him about the story about if happening here, without calling him on it.

I got to his shop 10 minutes before closing, and he'd already closed for the day. Next Sat I'll go again.
