    Any Generator techs/rebuilders/shade tree-rs

    I have a Craftsman 4000XL or XL4000 that is a B&S 7.8hp (I believe) power plant with GN220 designation....I believe it to be a Craftsman branded Generac GN220 setup...

The oil seal between the power plant and generator was leaking and it needed a new carb and a few other parts so I decided to tear into it and get her up to snuff...

Problem I am having is the seal that is supposed to go in to the crankcase, I cannot seem to get seated....it is like it is 1mm to large or something and if I do get it to seat, it peels off part of the outer coating when pressed into place....

Does anyone have access to get said oil seals 0e3811/81695 and have a way to get that puppy seated and local to Austin?

I need to get this one off the work bench so I can get a couple more engines up there to rebuild.

Sounds like you might have the correct part number, but the part does not fit. If you have the seal that fits, take a micrometer and get the critical dimensions. Then, look up a seal distributor, and give them your specs. They might be able to match you right up !!
Or...get another Oe3811/81695 and hope it fits. Good luck !!

    this might help:

I bought two when I found them a while back, just in case....just a tad too big..I will see if I can find the old one....hopefully it is not too out of round

the 'entrance' to the seat is a bit beveled, it's almost like to get the seal in, you need a tapered cylinder to press the new seal down in place without it 'flaring' on the edge when seating...I have never seen a tool like that but I can definitely see a need for one

          yep....that's what I thought I had....two of them...however....^^^

would like to basically find out if there is a place in Austin I can just take it to, walk in, get the seal purchased and pressed in and walk out...the rest is a cake walk to get back together.

I don't want to go ahead and purchase more seals online right now until I have exhausted any local possibilities

blacksunshine: see if you measure 41.4 mm on the OD of the hole.

The seal has to be very close to this dimension or it will deform the seal and it will leak.

Good idea on taking to the folks with the tools !!
Check out good lawn mower shops or machine shops, maybe some automotive repair shops.
Good luck, nothing like something that should be easy.....and it isn't

after around 5 calls, found a place in RR that should have the seal or could find it, well, what the part number calls for...

Generator tech I talked with said it should have been fine with the outer skin peeled off a bit as long as it was seated square and not deformed....says he would have run with it because chances are, it wouldn't leak....

waiting on a call back from capital bearing...
