You did absolutely right. I have sold a few items on Craigslist and people crawl out from under rocks, make low ball offers, and get mad if you stick to your price. I had one guy call me one time to lecture me on how I was too high on an item; I told him if he was interested he could come look an make an offer. He told me he wasn't really interested, just thought I'd like to know my asking price was a little high. That guy got an earful to say the least.

Anytime I use craigslist, I ask if the price is firm in one of the first emails/text. I'll haggle to save a few bucks. If I didnt want to save a few bucks I would buy new. I always ask wahats the best price we can do. If they say there is no movement, I should be prepared for it as they posted their asking price.
I wouldnt drive an hour then try to haggle and then be upset that you didnt accept the offer. That is just dumb.

There's good and bad on both ends of the spectrum. I recently found a boat I wanted, contacted the seller and made arrangements to go see/buy it on Sun., the only day he had free. I contacted him again on Fri. night to make sure of the trailer ball size, light connector, etc. and told him again that I'd be there Sunday. I texted him Sun. morning to let him know we were leaving town with no response, we went and got my FIL's truck, filled it up and headed to Lubbock. I texted him again from Snyder, and again, heard nothing. 20 min. out, I get a text "Sorry man, a guy came by this morning with cash and I sold it". I wasted 6 hrs. out of one of my two days off and $100 worth of diesel because this DB couldn't show a little common courtesy. That was a few months ago and I'm still pizzed off.

You're not in the wrong... if I post something up and i'm not in the mood for a bunch of back and forth then I post a "firm" price and it is what it is. If not, then I expect to get haggled a little bit, thats part of the fun of buying and selling stuff on here or CL. Some folks like the haggle more than they like the actual item, so I often will put a little buffer in there so they feel like they have gotten an acceptable deal.

Here's my .02 cents. Over the years I've probably done over 500 CL transactions, selling and buying; seriously. And I have learned a lot.
Were you right? Yes AND no. CL is not a "Buy it now" place like eBay. eBay has turned into nothing more than a glorified retail store IMHO. People go to CL for deals. If you post something on CL and you don't note in your ad that the price is firm, expect people to want to haggle. Some people think that when they drive a long way and show up with cash (which is what everyone pays with anyway) that you will/should lower the price out of sympathy. Don't know why they do it, but they just do.
That being said, just set your price accordingly. People want to feel like they got a deal on CL. If the price you listed it at was your bottom dollar, just say that in the ad. It will save you a lot of wasted emails and/or calls.
Think of it this way...if you had listed it for $50 more, someone may have bought it for that
If this guy had show up to look at it at the higher price and you had "Let" him haggle you down $50 bucks, he would have thought he got a good deal and you would have sold it for the price you wanted
