Anyone wanna get in on my applications? The spots are 2 archery only deer at Chaparral, and 1 Archery mule deer at Elephant Mountain. If anyone is interested let me know. The more people I have on my applications the better the chance we draw out. We'll be hauling a camper to stay in up there with a jeep to get around in.

The way I've always understood it is that they average everybody's preference points and put each applicant's name in the pot that many times. So as long as you don't have someone on the card that brings your average down, you are helped by having more names on the card. Not sure if that is right or not.

If you're not drawn then everyone on the card gets one point added in that category.
Ground Level would you care to clear this up for us?

Some people have dropped off of some categories for us and we each have 12+ points for a couple of categories. We won't put anyone else on those cards until after we get drawn. At this point, everyone would simply hurt our chances of getting drawn.

So say you have 4 people on a card, they average the preference points for all 4 then add one name. Just a thought for you. Good luck on finding people to go.

If you have 4 people on a card and they have 10, 5, 1, and 0 points, your card will get thrown in the hat 4 times. 10+5+1+0=16, 16/4=4.
The 1 and 0 guys are bringing down the other 2.
Originally posted by Shane View PostThey put every applicant's name in the pot, and if any one applicant's name is drawn then everyone on the card goes hunting. That's the advantage of having multiple names on a card. At least that's the way I've always understood it.
If you and 3 buddies are on the same card and all of ya'll have 5 points, ya'll's card will be in 5 times.
When you put in for the draw, it doesn't really help or hurt your chances of getting drawn by filling all spots on the card. TPWD is going to keep drawing cards until they reach the number of permits they want for that hunt.
The good thing about filling the card is you have more people going on the hunt to split costs, help set up camp, help track/clean animals, etc.
However, when you go for standby, TPWD will generally pull a certain amount of cards. That is when you normally would want to team up with others to fill all spots on the cards to help more hunters get drawn.
I've been to Chaparral when they only drew 1 standby card. There was 1 guy on the card, so he was the only standby who hunted.
I've also been there when that 1 standby card had 4 hunters on it, so 4 people got to hunt on standby.
I've also had a buddy get burned who got on a stranger's card for standby. They got drawn, but there was 3 buddies and then my buddy. The other 3 guys pretty much dictated what pasture they would hunt in, who would hunt where, etc. because it was 3 buddies against 1 "outsider". Same guy has also been drawn on standby with total strangers and he had a awesome hunt.
There's trade-offs both ways, just letting everyone know both sides.
