The time to understand what your policy covers is before you have a claim. Sit down with your agent from time to time to discuss your coverages so that there are no surprises when it comes claim time.

I'm not trying to upset anyone with the post I made about LOOP HOLES in insurance policies. I do understand my policy & what my coverages are. But from personal experience my auto insurance company did not pay or reimburse me for my medical bill EXACTLY LIKE MY POLICY SAID. I had medical coverage at the time I had the accident & still have it now. My medical coverage on my insurance policy states that I have up to 2 YEARS to set up a medical claim. After finding out the insurance company of the vehicle that him me was not paying my medical bill, I made a claim with my insurance company. The adjuster who was a total *** said I only had 3 MONTHS to see a doctor & make a claim. I told the adjuster that my policy stated I had up to 2 year to make a medical claim & if she could show me where that was stated in my policy. She said that part was not on my policy, it's just something that they go by. If that is not some type of loop hole I don't know what is.

If in fact your policy states that you have up to 2 years to make the claim, then that is not a "LOOP HOLE". That is an adjuster not taking care of his/her customers.

If you want to know about an auto insurance company, call a respected auto body repair shop. If you want to know about home owners call a respected roofing company. They both will know better than anyone who is best at paying claims.

very good point BrianL....when you have a claim is when you find out how pleased you are with your company.

I was actually having this exact same conversation with a friend of mine the other day.

Very good idea....... Since I switched to Geico I just called the shop I've used in the past and he said he's not had any problem with them or Progressive.

                Thanks for the tip.

                  Howard, thanks for the info.

A little dated, but I just found this...looks like they are pretty smart underwriters also (just kidding Bill):

THE GERMANIA WITHDRAWS.; New York Company Will Write No More Insurance In California.
Special to The New York Times.

                  June 12, 1906, Tuesday

SAN FRANCISCO, June 11. -- The Germania Insurance Company of New York will write no more insurance in this State, will close all its offices, and abandon California as an insurance field. The telegraphic instruction has been received from the home office to that effect.

What Dale said. If you like your Agent, they are good to you, they take care of business, etc., then the bumps in the road dealing with whichever insurance company are less of a hassle. I go to some restauraunts and I know I overpay for the food there. However, I know I recieve great service at the same place over and over again. I bet there are a lot of us here that "overpay" for things but we are happy doing it when the right service is provided.

ok as a bodyshop employee i can say who pays the worst, which unfortinatly filters back to the customer at some point, farmers is the absolute worse paying ins company hands down, they cut everything even clearcoat time and also how much they pay for materials, now for big claims they cap the materials at 400 bucks which is no where near enough,im not saying this is affecting your repair YET but its coming believe me,state farm still pays the best

Call a good local independent agent that handles personal lines insurance. If you're a good risk...they should be able to beat State Farm, Allstate and other captive carriers. Someone said it best with their thread....they like their agent...it does make it difference...don't always buy the cheapest.

Remember...you never ask yourself if you can get a cheaper bow...now do you?:

I have been with USAA since I was 16. Through my college years when on a tight budget I shopped it around. The All State and State Farm guys, I visited, one being an older duck hunting buddy of mine, told me they couldn't touch USAA and I'd be crazy to leave.

I've pretty much held to that and they have been super through the years with customer service. I have multiple policy discounts and I am happy. It was kind of odd when they recommended Progressive for my Ranger when I bought it. They came in at almost double and told me that's just the way they rate ATV/UTV and motorcyles.:eek.

I will have to toss in my happiness with Farmers as well. I had them when Rita hit in 2005. Believe it or not, I had checks on two of my properties 4 days after landfall here in Orange, Texas. The checks were printed in the adjuster's car on a thermal printer. I had money in my hands with no banks to deposit the funds. I had to drive 100 miles west to get to a branch of my bank.

I did have a horror story with a local underwriter and had to lawyer up to get things right.

I spend over a $1K a month just on property insurance with my one agent now and in times of need they better be there. I am close to this guy, we fish together and have been friends for a while but the way I was serviced after Rita sold me hands down.

Most importantly, READ YOUR POLICY to insure that you have what you are purchasing, mistakes can be made.

As far as Allstate, **** on them!! My parents had our home, a rural camp, and a lakehome all insured for a period of 18 years as well as their vehicles, travel trailer and boats for nearly the same time. They had never made a claim on a dwelling, it worked out to over 45 years of home insurance between the 3 places. Anyhow, my Dad passed away in 1986 and in the next month our home was struck by lightning and damaged the stove, microwave and TV. My Mom filed the claim and received the check as well as a cancellation policy for all the insurances on everything. All those years with the same agent and lots of premiums paid, can you even imagine??

Berandal- not the same company. Germania Farm Mutual Insurance Company is a Texas only company and has been writing in Texas only since 1896.

That is not a related company at all.

Just goes to show the difference in experience. I certainly won't discount your experience, which is clearly more extensive than mine. But when I've had claims on my truck, I only have one guy that I'll let do the body work, and he's the best in Tarrant Co. IMO. He's also expensive, but I've never had a bit of trouble gettin $$ from Farmers. Both claims on my insurance (when I hit a deer), and someone elses (guy backed into my truck-he had farmers too) were payed in a hurry without question.
