If you were into highlight reels, than Barry was your man. If ya needed a first down or clock ran down so that you could win games, better choose Emmitt. If I was a QB in the NFL, give me the work horse who will block and do whatever we need to win. Same QB would probably love to watch Barry's highlights on sportscenter when they got home.

Don't kid yourselves cowboy fans, emmitt wouldn't have done near what Barry did. Barry didn't have a line, defense, or much else.
Barry there no way he is underrated. Maybe by the newer generation of football fans that don't know anything. He was probably the best or second best RB of all time.
He wanted out of Detroit. They refused to trade him or release him. They wouldn't get him any help, so he retired. I saw an interview where he told them that he had his health and had money so he didn't have to play. I don't blame him.

.Yes, Emmitt had a great offensive line in the dynasty days but he was still a 1000 yard rusher through the remainder of his career in Dallas until his last (2002 season) where he missed the 1000 yard mark by 25 yards. And the offensive line near the end of days in Dallas were nowhere near the line of the glory days. By 2001, with the exception of Larry Allen (Hall of Famer), the line was left with guys like Flozell "False Start" Adams and a motley crew of linemen whose abilities ranged from mediocre to downright awful. And his very last season Emmitt almost got a 1000 yards with the Arizona Cardinals, and their line was abysmal. Yes, Emmitt did not have the speed and burst of Sanders, but he did have the vision, the innate ability to pick up yards, make people miss and get into the endzone. He was exceptional as a receiver in the backfield and Emmitt did one thing way, way better than Berry Sanders . . . pick up the blitz. Emmitt was an outstanding blocker as well.
And for the record, Detroit wasn't awful the whole time Barry was there. They were actually a playoff team numerous times in the early to mid '90s and won their division a couple of times. In fact, I remember the Cowboy's first playoff run in the Jimmy Johnson era, my poor Cowboys were blown out by . . . Barry Sanders and the Detroit Lions. Yes, the Lions were falling apart by the end of the 90s but uh, so were the Cowboys

An underrated RB would be somebody like Gale Sayers. Any time you ask who the greats are you hear the same answers: Sanders, Campbell (my favorite), Payton, Brown, Simpson, E. Smith, Dorsett, Walker, and even a vote for Allen or Faulk. The name that never rolls of anybody's tongue is Gale Sayers...even though he was arguably one of the top 5 RBs to ever play.
