It was my buddies ranch that has been in his family forever and his dad called him recently tellin him that he was goin to sell it so he asked me if i wanted to go with. So we hope in the truck monday (first time ive took off work) and we get there, throw out corn, unload the truck, and then go check the feeders.
One feeder still had corn in it from january so he told me to sit in that blind that evening. the feeder that he was goin to sit at was out so he just threw out corn.
We were running a little late gettin in the blind because we stopped by the neighbors house to have a beer and tell him the sad news about the ranch. the feeder i was sittin at was goin off at 6:30 and it was already 6 by then. so we finally leave and head to the blind. i get in and notice there wasnt a door, so im sitting there and the feeder goes off. i had noticed a small clearing about 20 yards away in a draw that the blind was next to and was wondering if anything ever comes in from that direction, because he was tellin me the deer will come from a different trail. well it was 6:38 when i noticed out of the corner of my eye somethin moving in that clearing, the side that didnt have a door, it was an axis buck, i knew i had to throw the gun up quick because he was about to cross into some oaks. well the way i was sitting, there was no way to get the gun on my right arm, so im shakin tryin to hold the gun up left handed i click the safety off and he looks up, about to jet. i pull the trigger and he jumps up, throws that left front leg in the air and bolts into the oaks trees. i got out of the blind to make sure he was down, sure enough. it wasnt my biggest axis but it was definitely a fun hunt having to shoot left handed and only 20 yards away haha.
so i get back in the blind and wait thinkin maybe another axis would walk up but didnt have any luck. it was gettin close to dark and i was tellin myself to hurry and get out so i can get the other deer gutted because it had been sitting there for quite some time. i had drug it in the shade so it would help keep the meat good but it was still 90 something degrees out. so i get out of the blind and start walkin to the lodge to get a knife, get there, get the knife, start walkin back and right when i had started to gut the deer i hear, THUD... KABOOOM! my buddy had shot. it was only 40 acres so the shot sounded like it was right next to me. i walk back to the cabin and he was already there, still shaking from buck fever, i asked him what he shot and he tells me HUUUUGE axis! i told him good job and all and i was gonna play a little trick on him, i told him " youre gonna be mad at me man, i accidently shot a whitetail buck ". he goes wth? how do you do that? it was only 6:40 when you shot?!?! i said man im sorry i just couldnt tell.... haha he didnt know what to say, he had this look on his face like, what an idiot.

well we load the deer up and we start quartering everything up and he says this is pretty crazy but ive been hunting this place for 24 years now and this is THE biggest hard horned axis ever shot on the place and the last one too. i was more proud of him shooting his axis than i was with mine because i could see it in his eyes that he was sad to see the place go.
