Agree but most people kind of over-exaggerate it. I was told all kinds of horror stories and when I got up there it was like "this is it?" you need to be able to walk at a steady pace up inclines and for long distances but its not the bataan death march.

a guy needs to be healthy and in shape.....he doesn't need to be built like stallone to kill an elk.

Getting one out of there after its down, however, is a different story

I didnt say you had to be built. I said that you should be in the best possible shape you could be in if you are really serious about killing a bull. Did you kill an elk?

Don't know what a Bataan death march is or where you were hunting but in the places I have been Lance Armstrong would have had some issues without his roids! lol.

My legs have been tired but have never gave up on me. Its my lungs that need the most work and it helps to not be carrying extra load of 25-30lbs of fat along with me!

Grizzman, you run 40+ miles per week and have gained 15 lbs!? That is hard to do. Beer arm must be 10lbs of that.

Tonight, I pushed myself a little bit. I had the 15% grade at 3.5 mph and went right at 70 minutes that gave me over 3000 vertical feet and 4 miles walked! Feels great! An iPod with Kid Rock and Billy Idol makes time fly!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I am old and love rock!

Here's my supplements. I have used them both in the past with great results. The red jug really taste great after a hard work out. It helps with muscle recovery and soreness alot. Lower sugar levels, and a good amount of protein. And did I mention it taste great! But ya got to get berry blast...the other flavors are not near as good. The prework out is moderate but still gives ya a good pump. I don't like the stuff that gives ya the jitters after taking it.

A lot of it is the area you are hunting. If you're hunting southern NM, no you can get away with being not as in shape.

Biggest difference in being in top shape is being able to cover more ground and get further from the roads. Being in shape Isnt your ability to climb 4000'+ a day, its your ability to recovery quicker from that hike.

You don't beat the altitude by being in shape, you just manage and recover quicker from it.

Why limit your options from not preparing? Why spend hundreds of dollars, and travel thousands of miles to possibly not be able to get around and in front of a big herd bull because you decided to only walk 2 miles a day on flat land two weeks before you leave?

I run in the hills in my area, but also strap on my pack at 40-60lbs and walk on the treadmill at full incline for 1-2 miles at a time to get those muscle groups used to the load. They say to try and breath only thru your nose to replicate the altitude. I've done that as well and it does limit your air intake and starve you of O2.

                            I'm going to try that!

I biked for 7.5 miles today then I worked my tricepts and then finished it off with 3 miles on the treadmill at 15% incline for 1 mile then 7% for 1 mile then 15% for the last mile. I am feeling so much better after only a few weeks training!

Gained most of it tapering for the Cowtown Marathon in February, then put some on "reverse tapering" after the Marathon. I was running 50-55 mpw before the taper. I don't drink beer (much) anymore. My next marathon training cycle is starting up, so I expect to lose it in the next couple of months.

lol, make no mistake, my lack of killing an elk was due to my novice bowhunting skills, not a lack of physical fitness.
