If none of your previous administrators are at your old school then it has to be something in your file that the new administration is sharing with people calling and checking references.

I know that when I was a teacher/coach that we had a end of year meeting with both our athletic and department chairs where we discussed my yearly review and what was going in my file.

I would be trying to find out what's in that file if you don't already know.

I thought all a previous employer was allowed to say by law is if you worked there and if you were re-hireable...nothing detailed.
You might want to look into this farther..not so much for getting the job..but possible retribution for anything said..

I totally understand. I have had the same situation and nobody would man up. It stinks but all you can do is rise above, take the high road and sooner or later it will all work out. It may be that the person reporting is the jack wagon that has issues or insecurities and they just took the opportunity to throw you under the proverbial bus.

              This too shall pass.

I'm not liking the idea of a prospective employer blaming something on a previous employer.
                Something just sounds fishy.
The standard answer would have been, "thank-you but we've filled the position with another candiate."
As others have mentioned, this is probably the best for now.
Best of luck in your efforts.

                      Coach

It sounds like that AD did not have the final word on hiring. That being the case the principle making that decision may have already had experience with the final candidate. The reference story could all be here say....nobody has to back up a choice in candidates. Could be he knew your previous principle or coworkers and they had a conversation about your early years.

Hold your head up...ask that AD if he knows of other openings at other schools....sometimes the grapevine fills those spots first.
