Remove surface rust from a gun?

My Dad gave me a very nice Browning lever action 22lr. He has owned it for a long time and he just did not clean it often enough or store it properly. Whats the best way to remove a few spots of surface rust without it taking the blueing off?

I remember reading something about a no.2 pencil, let me see if I can find it.

Quick search says the eraser might help, but maybe somebody else can chime in with real experience on it.

I've always just used an eraser off a pencil, or a good 'ol pink pearl eraser

I would spray it with Corrosion X and rub it with a copper penny. I don't believe the new pennies are copper. The bluing will probably come off no matter what you do.

0000 steel wool and wd 40, be sure to clean the particles and wd40 off. 4 ought steel wool wont scratch the finish unless you try to

Same but; Liberal use of 30w motor oil. If its really rusted I wrap in a oily rag for a day or so before working on getting the rust off.

Another vote for corrosion x. You can get it at Academy.
