how do I get my new 32" tv to work off of my external RV roof antenna to just pick up local tv channels?

You may have tried this, but push the "Source" button on the remote and see what your choices are. One will be to recieve a regular signal - as opposed to cable or satellite. -
Well I went to Best Buy and got it figured out. The antenna in my RV, even with it's little booster was not strong enough to bring in the local channels. So I bought a amplified antenna and it fixed me up!!!
