What Air rifle are you shooting.

We just got a certified rifle coach and are in the very beginnings of building a program in Midland County just looking for any advice that could be offered.

In my area they used Beeman R-9's, but check your max speed requirements because some areas won't let you shoot past 800fps.

Everything I will say is for 3 position precision shooting.
Anschutz, Walther and FWB are the three top brands in both small bore and air rifle. Just about any 40 grain solid point ammo with a velocity of between 1000-1200 will be decent. The top brands are Eley, Lupua. My kids shoot wolf which shoots just as good as Eley.

Be sure and sign up your club with USA Shooting, NRA and CMP. CMP has good deal on rifles and ammo but like everyone they are out of ammo now. If you are just getting started don't spend a fortune on ammo. Work on position and the basics first.

Check out Champions Choice, Champion Shooters or Creedmore for equipment.

Most important ASK QUESTIONS!! There are to many of us out here to go through it and not know. Here is my phone number 979- six three 7- 0307. I know I didn't answer all your questions so call me. If I'm busy ill tell you and call you back. Please don't hesitate, if i cant help you i know a man who can. 4-H can be the most rewarding thing around and in that same moment it can be the most aggravating thing.

I'll assumne you are shooting precision 3P? Of course you could shoot sporter 3p, CMP, light rifle or sillouette also. Neil at ISS in Ft Worth is the best resource for gear and advice in TX. Give him a call or make an appt if you are in the area! Walther, Anschutz and FWB are the top 3 rifle makers but don't discount the Izzys and older Remmingtons as well for rimfire action. Crossman Challenger is a great air rifle to start with. It's a sporter with as much adjustment as allowed and will serve beginning precision shooters well. Crossman also has a 4H discount!. For 22 ammo, stay cheap to start while kids learn position. We practice with Eley sport and shoot SK at matches. The Wolf does shoot well too. Right now, buy what you can find! PM or email if I can help you in any way.

Ok due to ammo we are going to start with Air rifles while the shortage dies down.

We thinking of starting with sporter 3p. Just due to the initial cost of equipment.

Looking at trying to decide between the 887 and the new crossman challenger .

Can we shoot air silhouette with the sporter rifle and be competitive?

              Yes you can compete.
Work on the kids structure- form.
My girls would shoot the pants off the boys. They listened and would follow directions. Make it fun and keep it safe. We shot postal indoors and it was nice. The kids ran the meeting prior to the shoot. We made it mandatory that an adult would stay at the meeting, with their child. It kept from becoming a drop off day care. Good luck with the club !!

I did it from 9 to 18 and some NRA after that. I shot a navy arms. Mostly lapua or eley ammo. State shoot is always fun.

Bringing back a dead thread, but my daughter is interested in the 4H shooting sports. What all do they do? Is a marlin .22 rifle adequate to get started? What else will she need?

smokeless--does your highlighted comment above ever take me back to my days in the Army on the rifle/pistol ranges. Guys thought they knew it all and the gals listened and didn't try to muscle the rifle/pistol. Good times as the gals drank a lot of free beer/wine when they shot the guys' down.

I put together a yearly calendar that list the majority of the indoor and outdoor smallbore an air rifle competition is in the state of Texas. If anybody's interested in that list send me an email and I will put you on the email list. Probably the best thing for anybody getting started in it, would be to try to find a match close to you and go visit with some of the kids and parents at those matches. Plus it would give you the opportunity to see exactly what is involved. My email address is brianlg31@yahoo.com
