    Need Feed Plot Advice

Planting small plots about a quarter acre around my feeders. Looking to keep the deer around a hair longer than just checking the feeder. Have a tractor, scalloped disc plow, Broadcast planter etc. I'm needing to know what seed mix will work best here in Collin County, TX in addition to what time of year works best. Any input and advice is appreciated.

There is a feed store in Denton called Dennis farm store. He sells a pre mixed bag that is specific to this area.. I planted it in Se oklahoma and it grew well. The seed manufacturer is http://www.mbsseed.com/. I have pics of My spring plot in the food plot thread running.

Thanks for the info. I'll look around for it. Maybe an admin could move my thread over there?

Not in your county but I got a good mix from the feed store here, had a ton of good seed, all I did was turn dirt, hand cast and drag a rake over it, I dont have all the cool tools.

some type of clover would be good during the warmer months, clover can adapt to most claimants.
Cow peas are also pretty durable during warm months, and low rainfall. Good Luck and let the feast begin!

If you have more that a couple deer planting plots that small near a feeder will probably end up with them eating it when it first comes up, and killing out your plots before they have time to mature.

If you have access to one, you could run a hot wire fence around it until your plots get established.
Buck Forage Oats would work well in your area for a fall plot.

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I'll try several things this year and just see what works.

As a follow up I planted Oats, Cow peas and Winter wheat. Pigs tore up the Winter Wheat. Deer didn't touch the oats and only nibbled on the cow peas. Guess I'll try something different this year.
