Question for you joggers out there

5 weeks ago I marked me out a 2 mile route around my neighborhood and started jogging. I'm 47 years old and have took it up several times in the past but never stuck with it. This is the longest I have ever gone. I started out jogging a little then walking but now I have worked my way up where I can jog the entire way without stopping. My question is when does it start to be fun?? Although I am proud of myself for sticking with it this far, I heard from joggers who have been doing it a long time that it is so much fun. Just wondering when that point will come! I jog 6 days a week in the early mornings and take Sunday off.

I'm with you. I'm into week 3. I'm doing around 1.8 miles on the route I have. I am actually starting to look forward to it. Getting ready to hit the trails in about 30 minutes. I have a problem with under pronating (feet hitting the ground on the outside edges) that seems to be causing me some leg pain. Got some new shoes yesterday. Hoping that helps. Just stick with it. I don't ever see it being fun. I ran hundreds of miles in the Marine Corps and never considered it fun. =) I've got a good partner to run with so that helps (my wife).

Lol. I know what you mean. I've done the same thing. I too am 47 and also just got back into it. I have never found it to be fun! I force myself to do it to lose weight and stay in shape but it is a chore! I got a good bike last year and have been riding it when I just don't feel like jogging, it is far more enjoyable but I can tell it isn't near the workout as jogging. I use an eliptical(sp?) at work and I actually don't mind using it for some reason. If you find a way to make it fun, please let me know! Lol. Thanks and good luck with it.

I have always jogged/ran for sports but I have never felt like it was fun lol. I don't mean to sound discouraging, it just gets easier and more of a habit than anything, keep at it!

I don't get the fun out of it either........... Isn't there supposed to be some sort of euphoria at a certain point during the run? I've never gotten any sort of this euphoria from running, just felt like tossing my cookie.

            I'm with you marshman......not fun.

I've run cross country and for the Army and it is only fun for me when I set goals to achieve and change my routes. Even then I never found it fun during the run, but more so afterwards when I had accomplished something. Also, try running with music or audio books in one ear (make sure you can still hear your surroundings). I know a lot of runners who use it as a way to clear stress or to think, so they find it enjoyable as well.

It doesn't get fun until you're in decent shape. Make sure and breathe in a rhythym.... Challenge youself to get faster with each run, even if its only 5 seconds. Time yourself and set goals....there is a "runners high" but I only experience it around the 3-4 mile mark.

I have noticed I burn a few more calories when the neighboring dogs chase me! I have NEVER experienced a euphoria either! Guess I never will.

Hang in there man - you are getting close to the good part! The huge majority of people who give running a try then quit, didnt stick with it long enough for it to be enjoyable. This is 100% understandable - running really sucks at first. For the first few weeks when you are running, all you're thinking is "OK I'm running..... This hurts..... still running! Ok, still running.... can't wait to stop!" Eventually, as your body gets accustomed to it you will find your mind wandering and you will be just cruising down the road just like you do in a car. I do some of my best, clearest thinking while on a run. Don't worry about how fast you are going and don't increase mileage too fast - an injury will make you have to start all over!

Good job sticking with it. I walk three mile every morning when I'm not at the ranch. I can feel it when I take off a few days.

Something that is super helpful when hoofing and really gets me in shape is spartan runs. What you do is do your regular 2 mile route but what you do is slow jog 50 yards and then the next 50 yards speed up then so on and so forth. Do that for a week or two and you will be up to 5 mile jogs and 2 miles will seem like a breeze believe me

47 also and have incorporated jogging into my exercise regimen from time to time. Have jogged off and on throughout my lifetime and have never found it much fun. Was even on the track team in high school, and aside from racing in track meets, I still didn't find it much fun.

I try to jog at night and purposefully go on the darker, more spookier routes in my neighborhood to get the adrenaline going a bit, though. Main downside to that is that your vision is more impaired and you can hit a pothole or some other obstruction and really injure yourself. Same goes for jogging on a trail out in the woods around twilight. Many years ago when I lived in the hood (5-points area by Park Lane and Fair Oaks Park in Dallas), I'd also purposefully jog at night when the thugs were out pushing their product and wares, if you know what I mean. That made it a teeny bit more interesting, but even still wasn't much fun unless I'd run across some guy with his head split open from a fight or some other kind of entertaining goings-on.

So in short, picking routes with surroundings that interest you can make it a bit less boring, but not by much.
