I am headed down to Port A for a few days of fishing. We are going to fish one day with Mark Jones and then we will be fishing from my boat for a few days. I was wondering if anyone knew of a lighted pier in Port A that is open for the public. I want to put my five year old son on some fish and thought this might be an easy way. Something not too crowded and easy to get to is a plus also. Just looking to catch some small fish under the lights! Thanks.

Bob Hall, and Horace Caldwell piers. Less crowded during the week. Some of the best fishing and most interesting top water fishing with bait I have ever done was on Bob Hall pier with Poco. It was called slide lining and it was exciting to watch 25+" trout come to the surface and swallow a 7" butt head hole.

OP...right now the surf is a magical place. If you wanna catch some fish for sure I would go buy a quart of live shrimp and rig up a float with a 6-7' drop. Hit up one of the piers mentioned above late at night and you will load up. Of course when the water color is good. The slide line method is an awesome way to catch fish as well it just takes a little more patience learning it and doing that kind of fishing. Like Muddybud said, we use to use a 6-8" bait and catch fish from barely keepers to 29" trout on the same bait. Its all about how long you can stand watching a trout take your bait and knowing when to set the hook. The way to learn it is go out there and watch people do it.
The live shrimp thing is way easier though.

Lets plan on it and we'll go try it one day. I still have all my gear.

I just got back from Port A and we fished the Horace Caldwell pier. I is perfectly safe to take your kids too. We fished Friday and Saturday night. Friday night we used artificials because we didnt know the pier didnt sell live bait. The guy next to us caught several trout and hooked a good Red. Saturday night we bought a pint of live shrimp and went back to the pier at 10pm. We caught 2 27" reds a 22" red and 2 20" trout! We fished the 2nd big light past the cleaning station on the left side. Here is a pic of my Red!
