You can use a dove wing as a retrieval toy. I used to use a dummy with a burlap material that has had dove oder dropped on it. They used to sell little bottles of it. Not sure what they have now but you also need to be mindful of gun shots around your dog a to not make it gun shy. One of the retrieve dummies i had used .22 long blanks to launch the dummy and give a bang. first you need to teach your dog to stay, you don't want your dog to go on bang they need to stay and watch the bird drop so they can see where to go. Otherwise you have to help point your dog. (that's where hand and whistle commands work nicely)

If you have to try to teach a lab to retrieve, then something is wrong with that dog's genes. You need to train the dog basic obedience commands so that he/she will be controllable and nice to be around and hunt with. But hunting and retrieving should be instinctual.

All the above but more importantly take that dog hunting a lot.

They will learn especially if other dogs are there. You will need to focus more on the dog than hunting for awhile.

Make sure you are around people who won't get upset if a dog ruins a hunt. It makes for a miserable time for everyone, mainly yourself.

Be very patient but consistent. Have fun and enjoy your new best friend. You will never understand unconditional love in the flesh until you have a hunting dog.

I second Water dog and Gun dog for reading books.

First step is obedience training. Teach yourself how to properly do this before you move on!

First thing is to find out if she is birdy and if she wants to retrieve. If nshe doesn't save your self some time and money if you want a retriever and find one that is.

You will need the videos mentioned above so you get the idea in your head first and then transfer it to the dog.

Short cuts is like free money they don't exist.

By the way Swampa is correct in obedience training first it is the foundation on which all their training will be built upon.
