I was hoping for one monthly fee rather then $1.29 for each song. Any other ideas?

There are several with a monthly fee, but you never actually "own" the song.
You can't burn it to a CD. You can only listen to it on your computer and a limited amount of other devices. Each song has a temporary license that expires after a set amount of time. You have to refresh the license every so often or the file will become unplayable.
When you cancel your membership, all the songs you downloaded will become unplayable after the temporary license expires.
If that company/service ever goes out of business, all of your downloaded songs will become unplayable.

If you download lots of new songs every month, this type of service might be a good choice for you.
I tried it for a while, but after the first month or so, I only downloaded 4-5 songs a month and it simply wasn't cost effective to pay $15/month to download 5 songs with a temporary license.
My son got an iPod, and later I got an iPhone, so I started using iTunes and haven't looked back. Any song you download is yours to keep and do as you please. Not exactly legal, but you and a friend could swap songs via a thumbdrive, email, etc., kind of like a very small scale "napster".
I still download less than 5 songs per month, often none, so this option has worked out for me.
One thing I did like about the monthly service option was you could find some not well known music to see if it was any good without costing you any extra. With iTunes, you pay for it up front, so if it sucks, you just wasted your money. There is usually a 30 second preview of most songs though, but a lot of times a song may have a 45-60 instrumental intro and the preview catches no lyrics.
