I'm not 100% sure on pricing but I would bet you're looking at $1500-2000 range.

As for the loss of Jake....he got out, got to trailing something, and ended up getting run over about 5 miles from the house.

The Boykin Spaniel Society is pretty strict on the breeding requirements and I am not aware of any major health issues within the breed. Gauge had some allergies as a pup but he grew out of it.

For training, I think I've been pretty lucky. Both Jake and now Gauge have the god-given obsession with birds and the drive to please. Lots of positive reinforcement with a little bit of stern discipline is usually all it takes. Jake could get a little stubborn but I think that was mainly my fault as he got older.

    Hope that answers your questions
I never read how you lost Jake but I assumed it was something like you described. I have an eng cocker about the same age as Jake would be that is pure bird dog, every time I take her out I’m scared she’ll get after some birds and get to a road. When you have dogs that are true bird dogs that’s always a fear. So glad Guage is doing great, he’s a beautiful dog and I hope y’all have many great hunts.

Figured I’d post a few updated pics of Gauge. He turned 2 in April and has been killin it this dove season. I quit counting but he’s gettin close to 200 retrieves in the last month

Three things you can count on:

Sun comes up in the East, Texas Bluebonnets in April and Gauge always looks good in hunting pics. Congratulations on your time with Gauge, that last pic with the dove in his mouth is awesome.

I enjoy coming back to this thread so figured I’d update it

Gauge turned 3 this spring and is becoming a great dog. We’ve been able to find a few birds already this season and hes pushing 200 retrieves the past 3 weeks

First time seeing this thread. Great looking dogs! A Boykin is high on my list of dogs I want to own one day. I enjoyed looking through all the pictures of both Jake and Gauge. I’m sorry about the sad deal with Jake.

What's the trick to getting the beggar's lice out of his hair after a hunt?

I was thinking "maybe that'll be my next breed" until I saw that face. I have a golden now, I don't like picking those things at all!

                                It ain’t that bad

Happens a couple times a year at most. If ya want to be proactive, some conditioner or cooking spray before the hunt makes a huge difference
