Dog cut, best fix to get it to heal

My two dogs got into it over a ball on Saturday and My pit got a pretty bad puncture wound on her chest. She has since licked it and made it worse. I took her to the vet last night as it was starting to smell dead and get infected. They wanted $640 then, plus $100/day for me to bring her back and get some packing and gauze replaced. I opted for a good cleaning and some anti-biotics.

What is the best thing you can do for them at home? I know some of you hog dog guys would know and wish I'd have thought of it before going and spending $200 last night. It is about a dime sized hole.

How wide and deep. You can take a water hose and spray it clean. Get powdered lime and throw on wound. It will draw the moisture out of wound. Then once you get it clean and dry go behind it with cut and heal. When it goes to scabbing get it wet anough with water hose to remove scab and do again. You do this until the healing is flush with skin. Once flush with skin let it heal. At first you have to keep the scabbing washed off or you will end up with a not. If he will give you a antibiotic shot this will help to.

I agree with the keeping it clean and the penicillin. I normally give 4 cc'c but thats just me.

We have always washed them out and bandaged if needed. Another methos we have used on cuts, scrapes, and all around is Volcanic Oil. Seems to work good most of the time.

local feed store, you can also get combiotic(spelling?) I had to treat lots of show animals when I was younger and that stuff is a good antibiotic. Yellow furox spray is also good on a cut/wound.

If you can still get combiotic, please tell me where! I want some bad. I've been told that they removed it from the market. I think it worked too well and vets were not making money.

Pm Bones, he will know the proper way to deal with it. One of my dogs got what seemed to be a small cut a few weeks ago. I had her on some peni. that I got at the feed store. Also keep the wound open on the outside. You want it to heal from the inside out. Again, just pm Bones.

Thanks for the info. Where do I get cut and heal?

What do ya'll do to keep the dog from licking themselves? Right now I have a T shirt on her with it pinned up tight to try to keep her from it, but I'm sure if she finds away to bite it, she will rip that sucker smooth off. She's not very big, but strong and tough as an ox.

If it not too big you may try superglue. I fixed my son's head this way and he played a football game the same night.

Don't know what they are called but get her the funnel shaped collar designed for this purpose. Petsmart or your vet will carry them.

We recently had a tumor removed on our lab's leg and it was the only way to get him to leave it alone. I will see if I can find a link.

Ok...Here's a link to the one at Petsmart to give you the general idea:
Keep your pup safe and stylish with our large selection of dog collars to fit any pup's personality. Browse our dog collars, harnesses, leashes, and more here.

It is a little flimsy for a big dog and we ended up getting one from the vet that was thicker. Seems like it was around $20. It's not fool proof, but it might do the trick.

I dont think the dog licking it would be a problem... I have always been told that dogs and horses can lick on human wounds and make them heal way faster. I know a couple old timers that swear by it and tried creams, etc.. only to get over a nasty rash on their arm,etc.. by a horse licking it. May be just a wives tale..

licking is good. It will promote the skin to grow back- thats what I have always heard. Aslong as the dog dosent have stitches or staples I dont see how licking would be a problem.

You can get Cut Heal at most feed stores. For a deep puncture use sublimed sulfer mixed with petroleum jelly mix it into a paste. After cleaning, push it deep into the wound, even if they lick it they won't get it all out. Or wrap it with vetwrap ( self adhering fabric tape ). Once it begins to heal use the Cut Heal.
