    Kodiak on Kodiak Island

So who has hunted the maneater on Kodiak Island? Did you hunt with a bow or gun? This is bar none my dream hunt and will start researching outfitters. If you have previous experience and had a positive experience with Kodiak outfitters, please do share. I understand you have to book these hunts about 3 years out so I am starting the process.

    Thanks.

I think that hunt costs between 25-50k. Ouch.

Check out Canoe Bat Outfitters, Jeremy and Steve run a top notch outfit, they hunt in the middle of where the largest bears in the world live. They take a couple of 10's and B&C almost every year, I took a 10' 5" with them last year, missed the book by 1/16 inch. I would rather take a knife to a gun fight than a bow on a Brown Bear hunt. All I can tell you is be prepared, the hunt is very demanding and the weather is worse. Good luck and holler if you need any info.

Been there and watched them as I chased salmon in the early 80s. A critter best hunted with a gun. Fast and dangerous in the river grasses.... The entire Island is covered with grass and shoulder high cover, they use this to their advantage.

Not sure if he goes on Kodiak but look up Billy Knolls met him at the DSC show and he has taken some Big Brownies this season...I would pick his brain he is helping me with a Semi-Guided Moose Hunt....Google "Modern Day Mountain Man' and his name will come up.

My uncle went not long ago and loved it. He would sit up high and glass the river bottom looking for them then make a stalk. He missed two and passed on two. Over all said it was a great hunt.

Marry a woman from Alaska so you can hunt as a resident

Super cool island, monaque is really the island of giant bears, story has it they put bears that are true man eaters out there. The worse part of this hunt will be the cost but the pay off would be super sweet. Fly in to anchorage then hop over to the island boat from there, not sure who guides down there but i would expect to cost 20k for a good bear.

I met Gary King a couple weeks ago who runs Wildman Lake Lodge. This is not an endorsement one way or another; just passing the info along.

He's been in AK all his life as opposed to what he calls "puptent guides". There are 11 30" bears in the record books; his hunters have taken 5 of those. Most hunts are gun but he does a couple of bowhunts a year; calls them "novelty hunts". While he acknowledges broadheads are deadly he hates tracking wounded monster bears because "there's no future in it". 2014 bear/wolf hunts are $24K and $25K in 2015.
