I got an invite from Jeff (AKA Humper) to come up to Jacksboro and try to shoot some turkey. Well I get to the lease early and start a fire and get supper ready to go. We had some Boudain stuffed pork backstraps, (Sorry we forgot to take pics of that. Too busy eating
), and some grilled corn. I think it was edible! After dinner we went and checked an oat patch where he sees alot of hogs. We scanned the field, which is full of cows and calves. I notice there is one pig in the field. We put the spotlight on it to make sure it's a pig, and not a calf. After we confirm this we had to wait for the pig to give us a clear shot away from the cows. Right when I thought it was gonna leave the pasture he turns and heads right to us. We sneak up a little closer, and I let one rip from my 223. I heard the thump, but couldn't tell where I hit after the flash from the shot. We walk up and he is taking his last few breaths. Perfect shot, right in the shoulder. It took both of us to get him in the golf cart! We hung him on the scale and he tipped out a little shy of 250? By far the biggest pig I ever shot!
We chased the turkey all weekend, but they never would cooperate. Sat afternoon I had one coming to my set up, I just knew this was gonna be my first turkey with a bow. He was about 100yds away and coming fast, that is till the rancher comes driving thru the pasture and straight up the creek bottom towards my turkey. Needless to say I never heard him again that evening. I had two on Sunday morning that just wouldn't come in range. One of them was in a tree till past 8:30. He didn't fly out till I took a shot at the other bird that I called in to the area. I knew he was just too far, but I was frustrated with chasing em all weekend and not sealing the deal. I was just hoping for a prayer!
Anyrate, I want to say Thanks again to Jeff, for the invite, and for getting me on my biggest pig ever. Also I had a blast shooting some vintage war weapons, and a real hand cannon
! I learned how to sleep with a set of hearing muffs on (Thanks Jeff!
), and got to hang out at a real nice piece of property. Jeff is a great guy, and has some real neat toys! I enjoyed the trip, the food, the company, and the hunting!
Thanks Jeff!
