    Devils River Canoe Trip?

Has anyone done this? If so, how was it. I would like to start 40 or so miles up from Amistad and canoe for 15 miles each day, stop and camp on the side of the river for about three days and then take out at Amistad. Is this possible? Are there place to stop and camp on the river or is it all private land? I would like to go at a slow pace an fish or even bow fish on the way down.

Can this be done? Has anyone done it? Looking for info.

    Thanks for your help.

I've been up the Devil's River about 20 miles from Rough Canyon Marina. We explored a cave up there like inexperienced idiots will do and beached our boat several places along the way. I'm not sure if it was private property but it probably was after you get past the Amistad National Rec. Area. I'd send off for a map from the National Park Service. Watch out for the danged rattlesnakes!!

I have been up the river from Rough Canyon as well. River was pretty low at the time. Not easy getting a boat upriver.

      somewhere up river.

Jake....if you make that trip, you will see some awesome scenery. It is some wild country. To me, it compares to Black Gap just down from Big Bend. I'm getting too old to make those kind of trips anymore but I sure haven't forgotten!

I started a canoe trip from the Devil's River State Natural area a few years ago. I was with my brother-in-law. He had not canoed much. Long story short, he tipped us over and the canoe got jammed against a rock and then got a hole in it. We had to portage back up river to where we put in. There are some class three rapids on the river. It's not for novices.
There was also some funky business going on in the cave on the river at the state natural area. A bunch of guys staying in the cave. It was creepy.

Also, the ranch owners in the area do not take kindly to trespassers. Do not expect them to let you stay on their river bank. Nor should you expect any help from them.

Thanks for the info. From all the reading I have done, it sounds like there are a lot of issues. I need to do a lot more research. Sounds like I will need to start a lot closer to Amistad.
