    What to feed?

Corn is draining my wallet and the deer on my place in Shelby county do t touch protein. So what can I feed besides corn that is nutritious and helps the bucks pack on bone!

I've been using a corn-soybean mix. It is 16% protien and it took a while but once they figured it out the deer love it. Unfortunately its about $3 a bag higher than plain corn.

If corn is too expensive and they wont eat protein, your pretty much out of luck. Most alternatives are higher than corn.

Maybe save up and try to plant if you have access to a tractor?

Hey texasjourneyman, are you getting the sb/corn mix locally? If so, where? I was getting it in Elmo and they stopped carrying it (horn corn). Thanks
I will send pm in case you don't see this.

I have two 10 acre plots of clover and chicory mix. I just meant like blocks or tubs of something besides broadcasting feeder corn. Maybe something that would last a few weeks just sitting on the ground.

Some of them work as far as attracting, but I wouldnt expect any results out of them.

Cotton seed is dirt cheap and the deer, mostly bucks eat the crap out of it. High in protein and great for antler growth. Easy to feed, weather resistant and hogs don't really like it but will scatter it all over the place.

This. Besides, corn is candy and not much of a body builder so if this is available look into it.

Uhhhh...not sure where you are buying cotton seed nowadays but in my neck of the woods it ain't so cheap anymore. Now that more and more deer breeders and hunters are using the price (supply and demand) has gone up!
Growing up we used to see this stuff stacked up in piles outside the mills...they would give it away. Not anymore...cheapest we have found around San Angelo is $350 a ton in bulk. And I won't even tell you my source on THAT! ( cause it ain't easy to find)

That is the dominant crop in South Texas. I pay $68.00 for a trash compacter sack full which is roughly 500 pounds. This is the way I buy it cause it is easier to manage. Right now they are eating about that much a month plus another 400 pounds of protein.

This basket was full about three weeks back. They hold about 250 pounds and I got two at two different feed locations. Going to make a run here tomorrow and refill them.

mix corn with your protein at first then slowly start drawing back on the corn
