    The mantel is almost finished.



    Sanded lightly and ready for stain. It's from an old barn that was disassembled in Illinois. My guess is 150+ years old since it is hand hewn.

    My great-grandfather cut down trees and made railroad ties with a broad axe during the great depression. My grandma told me he got about 25 cents apiece. Hard way to make a living.

              Nice. My son works for a custom home builder in Montana that has one guy who travels the country looking for and buying wood from old barns, docks and homes. They ship it to Bozeman and store it in a big warehouse and architects/ homeowners can come through and see it for planning their projects.

              Must be nice!
