    Finally- Our first chicken egg!

After about 4 months with 4 young hens, one of our Red Sex Links laid her first egg.

I know it sounds stupid, but the wife and I (and especially our 3 daughters) are incredibly excited about this.

Kinda wondering now how this egg production works. Will she lay one about every other day, or is production kinda slow when they first start out?

With the reds I get one to two eggs a day from each hens . It took about 3 months after they started laying to get eggs every day .

When they get a little older they'll be more consistent. During the winter your egg production will really drop off. You can put a light in your coop to keep them laying but i like to give mine a break.

First egg. I remember that, all the excitement of spotting it in the coop

My kids sure liked checking for eggs a few years ago when we first got ours, not its more of a chore for them. Love fresh eggs! Hate the big chicken snake I find at least once a year. Things will scare the heck out of you when you open the doors to nest boxes and see one curled up full of eggs

Put some golf balls in your nesting boxes. The snakes will eat then thinking they're eggs and can't poop then out and die. I don't have a snake problem any more.

Not stupid at all. I imagine that all chicken owners have the same feeling, we did.

Not stupid whatsoever; We added 2 newbies to the flock early spring and they have started laying just as the older ones are coming off of their winter break. We've had chickens for many years, but when we add new ones, it peaks the kids interests as they try to stay on top of who's layin which egg. Kinda a game to 'em.
