help with hit and run

A friend was just involved in a hit and run in San Antonio. A guy hit him and tore up his rear quarter panel and bumper on his 08 chevy. He was unable to get him to stop but he got the first three digits of the license plate. He believes it was an early 2000 white chevy and a contractor's truck as it had ladder racks and such in the bed. Can anyone run the numbers for a possible match? First three numbers are 972.
