Turkey fan - best/easiest way to save it

Looking for advice on how to save my first turkey fan for mounting.

Do I really have to peel teh skin back to expose all the quills.

    Thx

I flesh it out as much as possible ,and just use borax on the skin area , then pin the fan out on cardboard to dry. I have fans over 20 years old done this way

Yep and they have an oil gland at base of tail. I always try and make sure to get it cut off. Use salt, borax or dry preservative if you got it.
