    Confidence in the woods

So in the "season goals" thread I said my goal was to better my outdoor/directional skills. I feel as if I could get lost in a parking lot if it was surrounded by trees. I mostly hunt public land and this sometimes keeps me from going deep into where I want to be. What are some tools or tips y'all can give me to increase my directionality in the woods?

I just go by the seat of my pants but nowadays with I-phones and gps there is nothing that should hold you back.

Well, unless you know the area tremendously well, always carry a compass. I hunt in the big woods of the Sabine National Forest, and if I a mile off the pavement, in an area I don't know, which is close to impossible, without a compass, at high noon and overcast, I can get my butt in deep trouble. Very hard to get a bering if you can't reference the sun.

But that being said, you should use http://mapper.acme.com/ study areas that you are interested in scouting or hunting. You can use the satellite photos to locate how the creekbottoms run, where adjacent roads, powerlines, pipelines, and logging roads are. You can also get GPS coordinates to areas of interest before you even leave your home, so you already have specific places to check out.

A gps and try and pay attention to detail. Thats what I try and do when I'm scouting.

Google earth satellite imagery is one of my favorite tools to study an area I'm unaccustomed to.
