I have been taking my boys turkey hunting all season and haven't seen one yet. Friday I got home from taking the kids to school and as I drive into the field I see a huge turkey at about 20 yards. He easily had a 12 inch beard. He didn't notice me, so I drove backwards to the house and got my hunting gear. I had a struggle to decide which to bring, my shotgun or bow. I grabbed the shotgun because it was easier to grab and go. I stalked towards the last place I saw him and when I got to about 15 yards I see him look up and directly at me. I then realized my cat had followed. She was walking circles around me rubbing me. I had to pin her down because the bird looked spooked. He then went back to eating. I got a clear shot and then decided it just wasn't that fun with a gun and no kids. So I decided to just use my call and talk to him. He eventually left. I then got bashed from the guys for letting him go since my largest beard is about 6 inches.
The next morning, I took one of my sons to the exact spot to see if that was the birds pattern. We never saw the bird, but my boy did hear him gobble. You should have seen his eyes glow when that bird screamed. He told everyone about it. That made the pass on the bird worth it.
Yesterday afternoon, the boys come running in and told me the turkey is back. I stalked around and saw it was a hen. I then told the boys to watch it and maybe a gobble will come in. About a half an hour later the boys come in all laughing and panting. They then told me they almost caught the turkey. They said they snuck up on it and jumped out of the bushes and tried to grab it. I told them that if they did grab it, it would have whipped their butts. My older boy said that is why I brought my sword. Then he pulled out his nerf foam sword. I wish I had seen it unfold.
