don't get one if you are not going to allow them to live side by side with you in the house and be with you at all times.

We tried owning a Wiem - NEVER again - dang thing chewed up everything in sight and was so hyper you could not even enjoy her. We would not allow a pet in the house for anything though, so I am sure it is different if you allow your pets to live in the house with you where they are getting non-stop attention

They are high energy dogs. We trained ours to kennel. They will chew stuff if you do not run/play enough.... While young, otherwise most loyal dog ever. This is Bella Click image for larger version

Very true! just let them know who the boss is and they will be by your side and at your guard as long as you treat them well!

I've had 7 weimies in my life. 2 were show dogs and you are right, they were "different".

The dog in my avatar is from 5 generations of field trial champs. She has the most hunting instincts of all I have owned.

You will love your Weimaraner. P.S. they need room to run !!

They are great dogs. We have two of them that were litter mates. They are now 9 years old and I couldn't imagine not having them.

Every bird dog I've ever been around would chew up everything he/she could get in his/her mouth. You just can't give them access to stuff that you don't want them to chew up or dig up, and it doesn't seem to matter how much activity and attention you give them. As soon as they're alone, they'll entertain themselves by tearing stuff up - especially in their first 2-3 "puppy" years. I'd never leave a bird dog in my house unsupervised, and I didn't even leave them outside their pen in the yard unsupervised. As soon as you leave, they'll start tearing stuff up.

But the desire to be your best buddy is a good thing. You just have to deal with the destructive-while-bored thing appropriately. If you don't give them unsupervised access to stuff that shouldn't be chewed on, you're fine. If you do give them access to stuff that shouldn't be chewed on, you WILL be frustrated.

mikerr, those show dogs are a completely different breed from the hunting dogs, aren't they? The inbred show dogs are just idiots. They don't even look the same - pointy heads, goofy greyhound chests, etc... The old Weim hunting dogs are a LOT better looking and much more fun to be around.

I've had weims since 1999. Have 2 now, 1 being a blue weim (11 monthdms old), the other is 9 yrs.
they are hard headed so make sure you impose yourself as alpha now. They are full of energy so keep them busy, they need a lot of yard to burn, a lot of attention and I don't know of many breeds that make better family members.
As pups you may be tempted to kill the lil fart at times but work with them a lot and you'll love them.

Weims are the best! I could not imagine not having a weim or two in my life.....always have, and always will.

I have two right now that are 6 years old from different breeders (OK, TX).

Was just thinking yesterday evening how funny they are while they were out of their run and goofing around with me and my three year old daughter.

I've had them my whole life. I can't imagine not having one, but they're not for everyone. The puppy stage last about 4 yrs. if you can endure that, you'll have a wonderful family dog and God bless the poor soul who threatens your wife and kids.

We have had 3. I always tell people I have 4 foot counters - a 5 foot dog - and a blond wife. The one in this picture ate half a birthday cake.
We decided we wanted a laid back dog and got the Dogo. She is laid back until she wants to get it on, and then she moves mountains....
