    Garden Question

First time we've planted onions (1015s). How do you know when they are ready to pull?

    #2
When they get big enough the tops will wither up and die. You can pull them any time though. Once mine start getting decent size I usually start pulling one at a time as needed.

You can pull them and eat them when ever you want, it just depends how big of an onion you want. If you want to biggest you can get just let them keep growing until they start to send up flower stalks or they start dying off from the heat. If you have any that are putting up a flower stem from the middle go ahead and pull it and eat it cause the flavor and texture will start changing.

Reason I ask is one did this. I read they'll flop over. The onion is probably a little smaller than a tennis ball.

Letting em stay in the ground lets em get a good protective outer layer, ( for storage ) though it is not required. To speed the process, if they are as big as you want em you can push the tops over and they will dry up and you can pull em in a week or two. After pulling em put em in a dry place out of the sun for a few days to dry.

So now that this one has fell over just leave it til the top dries up?

The way I store my onions is I buy pairs of knee high pantyhose, drop in an onion, tie a knot above it then drop in another onion, continue same process until hose is full then hang on a nail in the garage. When I want an onion I go and cut just below the knot that is above the bottom onion, this allows the bottom onion to come off and keeps the rest still tied and hanging.

You could leave that one until it dries or go ahead and use it when you want a fresh onion.
