    mule deer hunting in tx?

i am wanting to do a mule deer hunt this yr and would like it to be a do it your self free range kinda hunt .

im looking on the TPW site to check public land that can be hunted and in what locations ex .. anyone from the north/ west tx area that hunt mule deer?

any help or hints on how to get this started .

    thanks

The only public land that has mule deer in Texas would be on WMAs through the TPWD draw hunts. Draw odds are extremely low on the gun mule deer hunts. The odds are better but still low on the archery mule deer hunts.

I have REALLY been wanting to do a Lake Meredith hunt but just haven't been able to put it together. Seems like lower success with more hunters at least during the rifle. Heard bow season is pretty good.

All the draw hunts seem to be pretty successful. I also definitively want to get on one of those one day too.

The draw odds a very long at best.

Look up the add that Cuz posted, you pay but it's nearly a DIY. Private land with good sightings and shot oppertunities.

Good luck but Texas is very short on Public land to hunt.

If you're willing to drive out to West Texas then it's just a bit farther to hunt New Mexico.

        Good luck to ya.

OK I grew up hunting crocket NF. Free no draw hunts . So you all are saying there is no public land out side of WMAs to just walk in and hunt mule deer?

I won the mule deer hunt at elephant mountain a couple years ago. Tough hunting and just happens the year I won was a serious drought. Lots of dead animals and no good horns to speak of. Just dumb luck on my part but I wouldnt of traded the hunt for anything. Yea I don't know about public hunting in the area, I was in Brewster county. I would be interested in it myself but I would think new Mexico would have more opportunities.

To my knowledge this is the only "walk in" public Mule deer grounds in Texas. All others are by drawing as far as I know of.

Lake Meredith is part of the National Park Service. http://www.nps.gov/lamr/planyourvisit/hunting.htm

If you're really interested in a Walk in DIY hunt you should look into Nalgi at the Laguna Atscosa NWR. (Deer, Hog and Nalgi). Do a search here in the public hunting section, there's a group of TBHr's that seem to have a good bit of knowledge on the area.

I lived in Fritch near Lake Meredith for a few years. The public hunting around the lake is tough but if you put in the work you can find some decent deer. I saw a giant mule deer but it was the day after season closed. I ended up getting on a lease up there so I quit hunting the lake. It's cheap, and you have a chance to see something. If you're really interested in Meredith, I can point you in the right direction. Also, There isn't a drawing to hunt, you just need a hunting license. Thee are also some decent whitetails there too.
