Two ways I know will work ;
1 - rub vaseline on the bark in a THICK stripe 6" wide around the tree as close to the ground as you can get. The ants will NOT cross it !
2 - Mix an ounce of peppermint oil in a gallon of water and spray the base of the tree and the ground surrounding it.

these methods are SURE-FIRE! My grandad did the same thing back in the day lol
