55 drum, drill holes to sink. Build a 2x12 shelf around the top, angled down to the outside. Set it in deep enough water that the bottom of the outside edge of the shelf is right at the water level. The turtles will sun on the board and sometimes slide into the barrel, and then are unable to get out.

Previous poster has the funner idea though. 22lr makes good turtle medicine.

Seen em made out of PVC with some kind of ramp that they can crawl up on and then they fall over the side into a net that hangs from the PVC. Tie it off to the bank to make it easier to retrieve.

Make a cage out of chicken wire, or whatever kind of wire mesh you can find. Make a square frame out of 2x6s or so like posted above. Put nails around the inside of the frame sticking out a couple inches. This is how I always heard to do it, the nails keep them from being able to crawl out of the middle.

My dad has one that is pretty effective.

Build a 3 1/2 ft x 3 1/2 ft square of 4" PVC water tite pipe square. This will be the floatation.

Build a metal netting below that out of say 1/2 " grid size of hardware cloth or I guess even poultry netting would work.

The final step would be to make a sunning ramp that stops at the centerline of the 4" PVC piping. He had two ramps but I suspect that it would work with 1 or 4 ramps. The turtles ultimately dive into the 43" square pool and due to the slipperly nature of the PVC piping, the turtles can't get out.

He caught a ton of turtles with that trap.

Hey Pablo, my dad has a trap just like your dad's!

They are super effective. You put a few chicken necks in it for bait & then just shoot the turtles that fall in the square pool. Their bodies attract more turtles & the cycle continues. Dad loves his..............except our water conservation lake has been dry for almost 3 years now. Dang this drought!!!

turtles will not hurt the fish population of a pond, but if you don't like them, the 55 gal barrel idea works, really all you need is the barrel with a board that angles up to it and hangs into it so that the turtles fall into the barrel when they climb the board
