    Negotiating with pool company tip?

How much negotiating room does one generally have with in ground pool companies?

Depends on how hungry they are. Chances are though, this time of year the good ones get busy and there is very little room to negotiate.

FYI, most pool sales people will under estimate your cost to maintain. Our chemical cost is $250 a year for a 12,000 gallon pool. Electricity to run the pool equipment is +/- $80 per month. Generally spend less than an hour per month to upkeep.

I'm possibly buying a house that has a pool, and I plan to convert it to saltwater

insurance rates will go up... as well as the cost for a new fence to keep off the street people from wondering in and falling in a drowning, they are dumb that way, so make it a good solid fence. oh...plus the 35K for the pool.

              Enough?

I was in your shoes and finally broke down too. There wasnt a whole bunch of room in any I checked. I'm a builder part-time so the company that had done a couple in houses I had built in the past cut me a little break and threw in the salt chlorinator for no extra but, most of the others are "that's what it'll cost" from my experience. Guess that's kinda the nature on a want not need deal. I can agree with the aforementioned cost. They told me about 30-50 a month in elect but I know what my bills were pre and post so go ahead and figure 100 a month. The cleaner pretty well takes care of it and the entire time iv had mine iv only added 2 five dollar bags of salt and still have the same gallon of acid so the chemicals on the salt are a null. Try and find companies that have been around a while and offer the lifetime no leak warranty. Iv had a couple friends that got a good deal, had nothing but problems and the companies were out of business in 2-3 years. Good luck!

                      Everything of value is negotiable.
Negotiation power shifts with time, use it to your advntage.
Going into the summer pool season is not the best time of year to do it.
Figure out if they do the project at the end of the season, when most people don't want a pool put in, if it will give you some negotiation power.

                      My thoughts, anyway.

When I worked for a pool company, we had a sign posted in the office. That sign said, "We do three types of work here.....Good, Fast, and Cheap. You may choose two." i found that to be pretty accurate.

                            excellent!

As it turns out, I'm not in a hurry.....

I can save you about thirty to forty thousand dollars on your pool.

Come over, bring a twelve pack and I'll talk you out of it.

I had a pool. Once you put one in the choices become either move or fill it in to get rid of it. Finally filled it in and moved on. Hole in the ground to throw money in. Always something broken. I have trees so leaves were always an issue. Never found a pool service or automatic cleaner that worked.

In terms of investment it's a looser. If you put it in you better plan to stay there long enough to get enough enjoyment for the $ spent.
