    Ketchikan Alaskan Fishing Guides?

I'm going on an Alskan cruise in June and one of our ports of call will be Ketchikan. I'd like to book a salmon fishing trip while I'm there. I've been researching fishing charters but they all talk a good talk and have plenty of good references. We will only have about four hours to fish so we want it to be as good as we can get.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a top notch charter out of Ketchikan?

I was in Ketchikan the last week of September last year. It is a tourist town to the point that most of the vendors literally close shop and move back to the lower 48 for the winter once the last cruise ship passes through. While I am sure some guides might be better than others, with only 4hrs,you might actually have a more enjoyable time going with a guide that's arranged through the cruise line.

Consider this: your mindset is going to be centered entirely around maximizing your fishing time 4 those 4hrs. An independent guide may not necessarily have that same mindset, and it may cause you to get antsy and irritated that time's a wasting! However if you use someone arranged through the cruise, their entire trip will be centered around your schedule getting off and back on the ship. The fishing experience may not be as authentic, but knowing that everything is geared towards the amount of time you have might put you at a little more ease and allow you to have more fun.

Are u going to Juneau? If so, charter a boat there to do whale watching AND salmon fishing. I have a contact there. We had a blast and did both on our time

From the research I've done so far, many of the charters specialize in the cruise ship fishermen and meet you right at the dock and are only ten to twenty minutes from the fishing grounds. I will check into what the cruise line has to offer. Good advice. Thanks.

Yes, we will have a port I call in Juneau. I would very much like to look into your contact there. Thanks.

I've been on that cruise and did the salmon fishing. We didn't hook up anything, but the guy had smoked salmon on board that was delicious. There were 4 boats that went out and only one boat caught something. They don't go far from port.. . was still very fun and worth the money.

Did you book your own charter or did you do it through the cruise line? Also, what time of the year did you fish?

I lived in Juneau for 10 years and guided fly fishing .... Ketchikan should have some kings running then. The fishing should be good but I don't really know anyone there. PM me if you want.

Checked with Mary's outfitter but he doesn't do the little four hour excursions.

I did it thru the cruise line... I can probably come up with contact info for the one we used... another thing though to consider is if you are late, there are consequences that you face unless you booked thru the cruise.
