    Weimaraner

Does anyone have any Weimaraner that are used as bird dogs like dove and Duck?

If so do you know of any breeders in Texas that are raised for that purpose?

How well does it do with other dogs?

I have a Weimar and he is COMPLETELY useless. Scared of all noises. Scared of people besides the family. No huntin. no water. Just a lazy but house dog!!!!!

Not saying that all are like mine but just my experience....

I have a Weim and we got him for a house pet only. Never had intentions of training him to hunt or anything. They have excellent noses and can find anything they set their mind to. I've done a little research on the breed since we got ours and they make GREAT hunting dogs. You just have to keep in mind that the training has to be done a little different than other breeds. They are skiddish (you can't be heavy handed with them) and you have to be patient. They are easy to train, but you can't spend a whole day doing it. Do a little at a time and they pick up on things really easy. My nieghbor is from Kansas and he's told me many times that the best quail/pheasant dog he ever hunted over was a Weim.

Sorry I can't help you with a breeder but if I run across something I'll post it up. I've always loved labs, but this breed has become my favorite. They definitely have "personality" and very loveable.

I had a Weim and she was a good dog; however, she was stubborn and a little harder to bird train than my labs. My step dad had one and he was the meanest dog I have ever known. He would and did go through glass to attack anybody that wasn't family.

Now, my German Shorthairs are incredible. They can be a little stubborn (unlike my labs) but...wow...they are smarter than some of my friends. They are obviously great for upland game but they are just as good for ducks. They have webbed paws for swimming and a waterproof coat just like my labs did. German Shorthairs have Weim bred into them...along with pointer, viszla, and a couple of other hunting dogs.

Unfortunately most of the huntability has been breed out of Weims, more of a show dog and house dog till folks realize how high strung they are.

Looking for versatility look at a GSP, or a DK.

I had a 1/2 Weim 1/2 Vizla growing up. She was a good dog, but I'm conviced it was the Vizla in her and not the Weim that was the hunter.

Curious, why Weim over other breeds? Looks?

My wife wants a weim whcih we will get I just know back in the early days they were breed for hunting but that has been lost since then. I came accross a site that says Parents with high scores in field trials, AKC or UKC hunt tests, or in the NAVHDA testing programs will most probably produce pups with lots of genuine old-style hunting instincts in them.

If i cant get it for a hunting dog that is fine she getting it either way but thought it be nice to have a hunting dog

I love Weims, but I suggest a Brittany, GS, or Lab. Many of the weims i have been around are similar to the ones mentioned above. I haven't personally owned them because of those reasons. Just depends what you are looking for. If you want a house dog/pet that can do well with some birds I'd say Brittany and Lab. If you want an amazing all around dog that you have a lot of time for and need an amazing amount of energy then go GS. My lab points and retrieves, but she can't hold a candle to my Brittany (plus size is great too). But, an all day long in the field tough as nails were my GSs. Also, GS were bred for ducks, but have become an amazing upland hunter. I will most like keep Brittanys from here on out though.

All that being rambled about.... Good luck with finding your companion.

Proven thru testing programs would be a step in the right direction, and I think NAVHDA has pretty functional testing.

                      I have had 3 and all hunted. None would do water when it was 40 degrees outside. {too smart}
They can be a hand full. Tons of energy and interested in learning anything.

With that said I was positive I would never do another. I wanted a couch potatoe so now we have a Dogo and Heeler. Ha - guess my plan ran off the tracks a bit.

I have a wiem that I tried to use as a bird dog, but he had other ideas. I have a gsp that is awesome and slightly older. She is an excellent pointer and is pretty good at dove hunting as well. I put him through the same basic training regimant and he just didnt go for it. Just not his thing. Likes to play fetch and goof around, but not birdy. Doesnt like gunshots much either. After a few shots, you can find him laying under the truck.

To be fair - my gsp came from a breeder that breeds dogs to hunt. Not only are her parents good pointers, but I watched her dad retrieve doves the day I bought her. The wiem is my wifes pick that just needed a new home. Registered, but not sure what kinda background or anything.

I have not heard of many good bird hunting wiems. I know there is some out there. But all the trainers I have worked with have said the same thing, they are just not that driven.

I'll say this - they are the most human-like dog I have ever owned or spent much time around. This guy loves people and will carry on a conversation with you. He also like's to sing.
